I originally had no intention of visiting Langkawi but a guy I met in Singapore suggested that travelling to Thailand via Langkawi and entering on the island of Koh Lipe was much more enjoyable than taking a bus across the border; and as I agreed with his rationale I decided to do just that.
I caught the ferry from Penang and bumped into two girls who had been staying in my hostel. They were also headed to Lagkawi and had booked into the same accommodation as me! So with that stroke of luck I immediately had friends to spend time with in my new destination.
When I got to the island I was surprised how quiet it was, I had imagined it would be very touristy, especially as my visit coincided with a Malaysian school holiday. I was also surprised at how pretty Langkawi is! It didn't compare with the photos I have seen of Thai beaches, but it is a really lovely island all the same.
There are quite a few tourist sights in Langkawi some of which didn't interest me (aquariums, fish feeding etc) and some that did (a cable car, waterfalls) but as there was no public transport and taxis were quite expensive I decided not to bother. I was also quite burned out on the sight-seeing front and was up for just lying on the beach, reading my book, drinking cheap beer (Langkawi is duty free!) and chilling out.. so that's what I did!
I spent most of my time with Emma (who I'd met in Penang) sunbathing in the day and drinking at the beach front bars at night. She was great company, and as she is from Finland I ended up learning a lot about Finnish culture during our time together!
I spent four enjoyable but uneventful days soaking up the sun in Langkawi, and finally, unable to restrain myself from the lure of Thai beaches any longer decided that it was time to leave, and cross the border into Thailand!!!
